Winning Work
DAI DARK
Q HAYASHIDA
< Translator’s Comments >How happy I am that I can again encounter this original space opera, which only Q Hayashida could have imagined! Apparently, Sanko and his friends were determined to fly around the unbelievable and vast universe as they pleased. Thus, while I deciphered the numerous instances of wordplay and the unique expressions set in the text, I earnestly served as a translator to be able to fully reproduce the tone shifts of this funny worldview, where humor rhymes with fear.
< Comments on Winning the Award >I am very happy to win the Konishi Manga Translation Award. For me, "Dai Dark" is a work that is completely different from other works and is one to which I am particularly attached. Thus, I am especially happy that I won the award for this work.
Although this space opera has violent scenes, it has warmth as a story and is permeated by Q Hayashida's unique skills with graphics and scripts. It is a work that can be read for pleasure and was worth translating. The reason is I understood that, sure enough, a certain fixed amount of fantasy elements was needed in order to apply to the French language the extraordinary concepts created by this manga artist's bountiful imagination. What made me happy was that each time I read a volume, the plot became richer. Thus, an enjoyable time would still continue, and I could look forward to interesting and scary new developments occurring one by one.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Konishi Foundation for International Exchange, its Chairperson, Mrs. Chizu Konishi, and everyone involved in administering this prize and whose mission is to bestow value on the profession of translator. Of course, I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone at Editions SOLEIL, particularly Joanna Ardaillon and Iker Bilbao, who entrusted me again, after "Dorohedoro," with the translation of "Dai Dark."
< Synposis >Amid the darkness of the infinitely expanding universe, this is a story about a young man who has bones that harbor a mysterious power. With his faithful "package," he travels while running away from aliens who aim to kill him.
