Shiro MIYASHITA
Winning Work
Gargantua, Pantagruel
Mr. Shiro Miyashita, possessing both deep reverence for Kazuo Watanabe’s translation of “The Life of Gargantua and Pantagruel” and an awareness of the work’s status as a classic, nonetheless wanted to create a new translation that appealed to a wider audience while still maintaining the integrity of the original work. Opting for a light and charmingly fresh approach to the material, he developed a wholly new translation of Rabelais, a work that has been roundly received as a groundbreaking achievement.
