Mr. Masataka Ishibashi is an expert leading the Japanese-French research of works by Verne and at the same time, he has a bright future as a literary critic. This work is a massive volume written in double-column with a total of over 600 pages but the translation is easy-to-read and overflowing with dynamism, allowing the reader to fully take in the joy of reading Verne. It is a translation based on a precise reading of the original text and showcases the fortunate collaboration between research and translation.
It is an ambitious task to provide a breath of fresh air to translated works of Verne, and at the same time there is a majestic tone found in his well-styled penmanship. A work like this that communicates the magnificence and fascination of Verne is truly worthy of praise.
Based on the above reasons, we awarded the 23rd Japanese-French Translated Literature Award to Masataka Ishibashi for his work on translating Jules Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon, Round the Moon, The Purchase of the North Pole".
